This class will teach you the skills to create your own handcrafted, cold process, custom soaps from scratch. This demonstration class will show you step by step how to make a batch of cold process soap. During the class you will learn a brief history of soap, safety tips and practices, how to properly handle sodium hydroxide, the basic chemical process of soap, how to customize your soap batch with color, scents and additives, options for molds and what to do with your soap after it saponifies (chemically changes into soap). Due to the time involved in making soap, you will not be making your own bar but will be given a detailed demonstration by the instructor with each step of the process. Every step of the process will be demonstrated and explained thoroughly. You will take home a bar of soap, a small soap mold, soap color, safety glasses, and literature on how to make soap. You will leave the class set up to make your own soap in the comfort of your own home. Welcome to Intermediate Beekeeping! We will continue to build upon the topics we learned in the Beginner Beekeeping class. One step closer to you feeling confident in owning your own hive! Join Plants of Texas and Daniel Lennon for our hands-on hive inspection class. Daniel Lennon will lead this class and will cover how to properly inspect your hive in real time plus other things to look for during a hive inspection. This class will be held at Plants of Texas in Flint. This class is perfect for all levels of back-yard beekeeping experience. Proper PPE (full bee suits, gloves, and boots (or other closed toe shoes) are required for this class for your safety as we will be hands-on with the hives. In addition, we will ask you to sign a waiver freeing Plants of Texas and Flint Farm and Apiary from any incident that could occur while on-site resulting from a bee sting or other injury during the hive inspection. Join Plants of Texas and Marissa Caggiano, apprentice to the renowned TX Forager and herbalist, Mark Merriweather, for a day of guided foraging! There are edible and medicinal plants all around us growing wild and free! Come to a fun and enlightening plant walkabout where you can expect 3 hours of learning skills and methods to positively and safely identify medicinal and edible plants, their uses, the ethics of foraging, methods and ways of using each plant, and the confidence to do these things on your own going forward. This 3-hour, outdoor class will cover: -Foraging ethics and methods -Where to find wild plants and edibles -What common plants can be found in our east TX environment -Safely identifying wild and poisonous plants -Uses for wild foraged plants This will be a walking/ hiking experience filled with exploration.
