This comprehensive class will cover everything you need to get started in beekeeping, including safety practices and essential hive components and tools, what to expect inside a hive, the developmental stages of honeybees, and a helpful checklist to guide you. Fruit tree season is just around the corner! In this class, we'll discuss essential pruning methods, what to expect from your fruit tree or small fruit plant, and tips for preventing diseases and pests to help ensure a bountiful harvest. This year, every participant will also take home a well-pruned 5-gallon peach tree, ready to be planted in their own yard. Additional fruit trees will be available for purchase and we will ensure you leave Plants of Texas with each tree properly pruned for success! Doug Arnold will be teaching this class. Welcome to Intermediate Beekeeping! In this class, we’ll build on the skills and knowledge you gained in the Beginner Beekeeping class, bringing you one step closer to confidently managing your own hive. We’ll cover topics such as hive inspections, identifying brood patterns, harvesting honey, understanding bee behavior, recognizing diseases, expanding your apiary, and effective pest control. You’ll also have the chance to purchase bees, hives, and essential beekeeping gear (suits, gloves, smokers, and more). Crape Myrtles are a popular and ornamental tree choice throughout this region of Texas, commonly seen in landscaping around homes, businesses, and even along roadways. While they are beautiful and easy to grow, crape myrtles are vulnerable to scale infestations. This class will cover what crape myrtle scale is, how to identify it, its origins, and how long it has been present in the U.S. You’ll also learn the proper methods and timing for treating scale, as well as how to remove black mold from the trees.
