Landscape Soils, Bed Preparation, and Drainage Fundamentals

Join us for a morning spent learning all about landscape soils, bed preparation, and drainage fundamentals. This class will cover fundamental identification of on-site soils, corrective amendments, and drainage tips for a successful landscape. This class will be taught by Jon Kirk. Jon has been a civil engineer for over 30 years with over 15 years devoted to professional landscape irrigation design, repair, maintenance, auditing, and water management. He holds licenses in Texas as a Licensed Irrigator and Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester, as well as Texas Water Smart Professional licensure through the Texas Nursery and Landscape Association. He is also a Certified Landscape Irrigation Auditor that is a national certification, as well as an EPA WaterSense Partner.

Hands-On Hive Inspections

If you have attended our Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced Intermediate Beekeeping classes, then you are invited to join us on-site at Camp Tyler to experience our first hands-on class. Daniel Lennon will lead this class and will cover how to properly inspect your hive in real time plus other things to look for during a hive inspection. This class will be held at Camp Tyler in Whitehouse, TX. Camp Tyler 15143 Camp Tyler Road, Whitehouse, TX 75791. Proper PPE (bee suits and gloves) are required for this class for your safety as we will be hands-on with the hives. In addition, we will ask you to sign a waiver freeing Plants of Texas, Camp Tyler, and Flint Farm and Apiary from any incident that could occur while on-site resulting from a bee sting during the hive inspection. You will not be allowed to attend this class without PPE. Once you get to Camp Tyler there will be signs pointing you to the bee yard. **You must have attended all three previous classes taught at Plants of Texas to attend this class. Ferment Like You Mean It (Food Fermentation How-To Class)

Join us for our last class ever at the tent and dive into the world of food fermentation. Beginners can open the lid on a magical world of kimchi, sauerkraut, sour dough, water kefir, and brine fermented vegetables. Perhaps you want to jump into fermented beverages like kombucha or learn to preserve the garden harvest without canning. You'll learn to preserve the natural way- focusing on fermenting and discover how live foods come to life! You'll leave with your homemade jars (alive and fizzing) and your recipes- inspired to create, experiment, and ferment all on your own! During the class you will get to try various live lacto fermented vegetables- a sauerkraut and another type of fermented seasonal vegetable. We will discuss everything you need to know about fermenting and brewing your own kombucha at home. You will receive your own scoby as well. This class will be taught by Ruthie Baugh from Baugh's Market and Event Venue. Our customer's fell in love with Ruthie during the soap making workshop she taught in April here at Plants of Texas and we are thrilled to welcome her back!

Beekeeping: Honey Harvesting Class

If you have attended our Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced Intermediate Beekeeping classes, then you are invited to join us on-site at Ozarka in Hawkins, TX to experience our harvesting honey class. We are sorry for the late notice of this class. We had a tough time finding a location that was 'honey ready' that we could host at and just received the approval from Ozarka this morning. This is our last class of the season! Daniel Lennon will lead this class and will cover everything you need to know about harvesting honey all the way to the bottling honey stage. This class will be held at the “Ranch House” at Ozarka in Hawkins, TX. Ozarka address: 3265 S FM 2869 Hawkins, TX 75765 Proper PPE (bee suits and gloves) are required for this class for your safety as we will be hands-on with the hives. Winterizing Your Hive

Join Plants of Texas and Daniel Lennon for an informative class on preparing your hive(s) for the winter months ahead. This class will cover everything you need to know to prepare your hives for the first frost of the year and beyond. We will discuss different resources needed for your bees to survive winter. In addition, when, why, and what to feed the bees if needed, and lastly identifying pests in the hive and learning what to do about them during the winter months. What preparation you do now will determine the success of the hive starting in February and March for the Spring season and new year ahead. This class will be held at the NEW Plants of Texas location. This class will NOT be held at the tent. Beginner Cheese Making Class

We are venturing into the world of cheese making! You will walk away with the knowledge to create soft, spreadable cheese as well as how to form semi-soft chesses at home. We will learn to make farmers cheese and a versatile cheese called Cacioricotta. Back by popular demand, Ruthy Baugh will be teaching this class. She is the owner of Baugh’s Market and Event Venue in Rusk, TX and has become a favorite instructor here at Plants of Texas for all things homesteading. This class will be held at the NEW Plants of Texas location. This class will NOT be held at the tent.
