Join Plants of Texas and Daniel Lennon for an informative class on preparing your hive(s) for the winter months ahead. This class will cover everything you need to know to prepare your hives for the first frost of the year and beyond. We will discuss different resources needed for your bees to survive winter. In addition, when, why, and what to feed the bees if needed, and lastly identifying pests in the hive and learning what to do about them during the winter months. What preparation you do now will determine the success of the hive starting in February and March for the Spring season and new year ahead. This class will be held at the NEW Plants of Texas location. This class will NOT be held at the tent. We are venturing into the world of cheese making! You will walk away with the knowledge to create soft, spreadable cheese as well as how to form semi-soft chesses at home. We will learn to make farmers cheese and a versatile cheese called Cacioricotta. Back by popular demand, Ruthy Baugh will be teaching this class. She is the owner of Baugh’s Market and Event Venue in Rusk, TX and has become a favorite instructor here at Plants of Texas for all things homesteading. We will have a bee expert leading this class. This class will cover PPE and safety, the hive components and tools needed, what's inside a hive, comb, propolis, worker bees, drones, queens and much more. The class will entail going through the processes of making tinctures, fire cider, and how to use herbs that you have at home, like elderberry and many other East Texas native plants to create your own salves and tinctures. We will also cover how to incorporate components of bee products into your home remedies. This class will also discuss infusing oils, vinegars, and making syrups. Come learn something new with us! Welcome to Intermediate Beekeeping! We will continue to build upon the topics we learned in the Beginner Beekeeping class. One step closer to you feeling confident in owning your own hive! Join Plants of Texas and our guest speaker, Dr. David Creech for a deep dive into how to find success growing fruit trees and berries here in East Texas. With the prices of food rising, now is the time to learn how to grow your own fruit for years to come. Dr. Creech is a past professor of Horticulture and is the current director of the Mast Arboretum at Stephen F. Austin State University. He has a vast knowledge of woody ornamentals, shade, and fruit tree varieties for our East Texas area. Dr. Creech is a great speaker and educator, and we anticipate this class filling up very quickly. This class will deep dive into varieties such as, blueberries, muscadines, figs, persimmons, feijoas, peaches, plums, pears, and apples.
